Visualization Design for US Air Force Research Project to Support the Decisions for the Planning and Scheduling of Sensor Collection Platforms

RCS specializes in intuitive graphical interfaces for high performance systems, including expert and knowledge-based systems, and the application of technologies to large, distributed systems. Decision Support Systems (DSS) from the RCS are designed to directly support the information needs of the operator in unpredictable missions and business critical decision-making.

Utilizing a unique integration of advanced information fusion technologies with decision-centered Human Automation Interaction (HAI) Technologies, the RCS has demonstrated improvements in operator-automation decision-making effectiveness. HAI Technology enables fusion technologies to aid the operator's cognitive processes, achieving faster and more accurate decisions. HAI Technology coupled with data fusion and sensor management technical capabilities create a joint human-machine cognitive team, which improves overall decision effectiveness. The RCS has the know-how to select the most effective visualization techniques for use in the DSS based on an analysis of the decisions to be supported within the context of the functional goals of the work domain and design the underlying data transformation technologies to drive them. The RCS team's expertise enables them to determine what information to portray in the information display / decision tool and how to visualize it based on the relationships between the information, incorporating years of research from the Cognitive Science, Visual Perception and Decision Making fields. Operators have enhanced observability of the technology capabilities that will enable them to understand, at a significantly deeper level, and how the technology is making the fusion inferences based on data characteristics (i.e., ontology, pedigree, metrics). In addition, operators are given explicit directability of technology capabilities that will enable them to effectively supervise and guide the technology (be it fusion or scheduling algorithms) towards the best possible solution.

RCS's capabilities provide revolutionary mechanisms for visualizing information related to intelligence analysis, system control, interaction with robots, dynamic rolling-horizon planning, and global domain awareness at force regional and national levels.
